COVID ALERT: Two Hospitals in Shanghai Suspense Operation

On January 21, Shanghai municipal health and health commission confirmed 3 local cases of covid19 at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Renji Hospital on Shandong Road M. and Fudan University’s Shanghai Cancer Center’s Xuhui branch from Thursday.

Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital carried out routine nucleic acid testing of the new coronavirus for outsourced logistics personnel of the hospital. A 56year old man tested positive out of 10 people tested for suspicious infection. A 53 years old male and 48 years old female with close interaction with case 1 also tested positive at Renji Hospital, Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and Municipal Center for Disease Control respectively.

The relevant municipal and district departments acted immediately and formed a team of joint circulation experts to conduct comprehensive epidemiological investigations. They are tracking and investigating relevant personnel and taking corresponding anti-epidemic measures for relevant personnel and the immediate environment of the hospitals. 14,411 related personnel have been screened, 10,971 test results are negative, and the rest are being tested.

In accordance with the relevant requirements of the State Council’s joint prevention and control mechanism, the Municipal Epidemic Prevention and Control Headquarters decided to list the Zhaotong residential area in Huangpu District (the area south of Fuzhou Road) as a medium-risk area. However, the risk levels of other areas in Shanghai remain unchanged.

People in medium-risk areas will not leave Shanghai and those who really need to leave Shanghai must hold a certificate of the negative nucleic acid test within 7 days.

According to the Shanghai Health Commission, the city also reported 9 imported covid19 cases as of Wednesday. All confirmed patients are Chinese citizens returning from Europe and Americas who arrived at the Shanghai airport on 9th, 18th and 19th January 2021. All the new cases have been transferred to the designated hospital for treatment, while 159 close contacts have been put under quarantine and observation at designated places.

Shanghai’s locally transmitted covid19 cases adds to the growing concern of the approaching biggest travel period of Lunar New Year and its possible impact on the fierce fought economic rebound of China.
