CHINA Honors COVID19 Heroes with Prestigious National Medals

The COVID19 pandemic has affection millions of people across the globe with thousands succumbing to the virus. Medical experts and millions of health care workers and associates were at the forefront of the battle against this novel virus, risking their lives saving many others.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday 8th September 2020 presented medals to four individuals and thousands of people for their outstanding contributions to the country’s fight against the COVID-19 epidemic.

“When a disaster strikes at one location, help comes from all quarters. China has mobilized the entire country and conducted an unprecedented rescue” Xi Jinping 

A grand ceremony was held in Beijing on Tuesday at the Great Hall of the People, which China’s President Xi Jinping commended key figures and organizations in China’s battle against the COVID-19.

At the hero’s welcome, 1500 individuals, 500 institutions and groups as well as 200 Communist Party of China members and 150 party organizations were recognized for their contribution to the fight against the novel coronavirus.

The Medal of the Republic was conferred on renowned respiratory disease expert Zhong Nanshan.

The national honorary title, the “People’s Hero”, was conferred on three people:

  • Zhang Boli; a traditional Chinese medicine expert who presided over the research of the COVID-19 treatment scheme combining traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine.
  • Zhang Dingyu; head of Wuhan’s designated coronavirus-treating Jinyintan Hospital.
  • Chen Wei; a military medical scientist credited with major achievements in COVID-19-related basic research and development of vaccine and protective medicine.

President Xi, belauded their contribution; the country, the people and history will not forget their sacrifices and efforts.

 Zhong Nanshan on his reflection on the honorary award said that the deepest experience is life is precious and that he will not give up on every life in the treatment.

The virus has no borders and is still raging across the globe. Chinese people do understand and relate to the hardships brought by COVID-19. Public health security is a common challenge for humanity, which requires joint efforts from all countries. China is committed to actively pursuing the development of “a community with a shared future for mankind,” which is a principle widely accepted and welcomed by world leaders, said Chinese President Xi Jinping. China continues to make conscious efforts not to lower its guard on the battle.
